Half Moon Caravan Park

Red Girl Mosaics in partnership with Salvation Army held a number of workshops for residents at the Half Moon Caravan Park. The Park is home for many disavantaged and low income earners who would not ordinarily have access to art.

TOTeM, Footscray

The TOTeM program supports disconnected young people to re-engage with education and training with a focus on individual learning needs and personal development. TOTeM is part of Connections, a Federal Government initiative aimed at supporting young people and is connected with Victoria University Footscray.

This project involved workshops with the students of TOTeM to create mosaic pavers for decorating a new garden at the centre.  The climax of the workshops is a visit to complete their mosaics in Julie's studio environment.

Walker Close Community Centre, Altona North

'Aerial View Of Hobsons Bay', a mosaic created by Julie based on a small painting by Donna Brown.  Julie was commissioned by Hobson Bay City Council to interpret Donna's painting into this large external foyer space, in the entryway to Walker Close Community Centre, Millers Road Altona North.  The mosaic depicts the meeting of the Yarra and Maribyrnong Rivers, and land and communities on either side of the river.   Julie uses the irregular space of the foyer and the inland flow of the Maribyrnong river, to lead visitors to a separate external courtyard space at the centre.

Altona Secondary College

This school project was conducted with a class of Year 9 students exploring Healthy Eating Habits.  The mosaics were designed for the external wall of the canteen area for the school.

Hartwell Primary School, Camberwell

Hartwell Primary School celebrated it's birthday by creating a Historic Mosaic Mural for the external library wall.  Julie worked as artist in residence with Year 6 students for a number of terms during 2006.  The mural, approximately 16 metres long, captures the story of both the school and the area of Camberwell as researched and told by the students.  It contains images from the days of early and pre-settlement, through the world wars and other events of last century, to modern times.  It tracks evolution of many local aspects including industry,  environment, transport, even the school uniform.

South Kingsville Preschool

A project with 4 year olds making pavers in the colours of the rainbow.  The children engaged in safe play with tiles, making and re-making patterns together, then agreeing on a final mix of colour per paver.  Red Girl was later engaged to design and create 'Storm Through Clouds' to complement the rainbow pavers.

Wembley Primary School

'Things We Leave Behind'.
A volunteer project with Grade 3 children to develop mosaics for a fundraising Art Show.  The focus was on seeing old or discarded things with new eyes.  Each child collected a leaf from home or school for the shape of their individual mosaics.  They also collected items from home that were being discarded or 'left behind' - the items ranged from bottletops and plastic wrappers to a watchface and showerhead and  were made into individual leaf mosaics.  The completed mosaic leaves were combined in a large triptych which was very successfully auctioned for over $600.

Craig Family Centre

Julie was engaged to work with adolescent mothers to create a mosaic together, based on their shared experiences.  The mosaic now adorns the Craig Family Centre in Ashburton.

Challis Street, Newport

Julie worked with all students in the local primary school to facilitate the design and creation of a mosaic about the local area from the viewpoints of the students.  Julie assisted the students in the research process also.  The mosaic became a 2 metre x 2 metre pavement insert to brighten up a local, older shopping strip.
